Herb Guide Usage For Health And Question About DHEA

Merry:

Here is some text on DHEA, as well as a weblink. Be forewarned that it comes from a commercial source, and natural remedies are still fairly unregulated. I do try to enter most of my "natural" remedies through fruits, vegetables, herbs I gather myself, my daughter and I stopped at about 5 wonderful fruit stands and purchased large amounts of fruits and vegetables. We had papayas, mangos, bananas, oranges, tangelos, lemons, avocados, bok choy, watermelon, cantelope, tomatillos, tomatoes, lettuce, celery, beets, corn, beans (dried and fresh), apples, peaches, cherries, strawberries, several different kinds of nuts, you name it, and we bought it. All were in the most wonderful fresh condition. I've been eating them all week, with a little fish, chicken, and beef (I admit to a couple of hamburgers). But I've been less stressed, a lot calmer, and much more energized. I'm trying to stay away from potatoes, rice, pastas

Q. WHAT IS DHEA?

A. DHEA or dehydroepiandrosterone is a hormone produced by the human body in the adrenal gland. It is the precursor of Estrogen, Testosterone and other hormones. Amounts in the body fall drastically as we age.

Q. HOW DOES DEPLETION OF DHEA AFFECT THE BODY?

A. Many experts have noted a corresponding lack of muscle tone and symptoms associated with aging in people with low DHEA levels. Therefore there has been speculation that increasing DHEA levels in the body may delay conditions associated with aging and improve muscle tone.

Q. WHAT IS "NATURAL" DHEA?

A. Some companies, seeking to capitalize on the vast potential of DHEA, are selling supplements purported to boost naturally the body's DHEA levels. Usually these are herbal products such as diosgenin or Mexican Wild Yam. These supplements should be judged on their own merits, but they are NOT DHEA.

Q. IS DHEA LEGAL?

A. Yes. Although until recently, DHEA was only available through a prescription. It is now available over the counter. But keep in mind DHEA is a drug and should be used judiciously. A visit to your physician is suggested before you begin taking DHEA.

Q. I'VE HEARD DHEA IS A STEROID...TRUE?

A. According to the Anabolic Steroid Act of 1990, 23 different drugs were classified as anabolic steroids. Under this act, DHEA is not specifically named as one of the 23 anabolic steroids. It is possible that future review by the DEA may determine that DHEA meets the definition of "anabolic steroid" as defined in the above act.

Q. WHAT SHOULD I LOOK FOR WHEN SELECTING A BRAND?

A. First, make sure it is "real" DHEA, don't fall for the "natural" line. All DHEA is synthetic, or chemically produced. Other than that choose a reputable brand and compare prices and milligrams.

Q. HOW MANY MILLIGRAMS AM I LOOKING FOR?

A. Preliminary studies vary widely in their dosages, most using between 50-200 mg. in divided dosages. Start low and see how your body reacts. Sports One Inc DHEA is available in 25mg 360 capsule size.
