DRUG SHOWS PROMISE AGAINST TUMORS

A study shows promising results with the drug AROMASIN (exemestane tablets) as a first-line treatment against advanced breast cancer in postmenopausal women. The study pointed to advantages of the drug over the standard of care, tamoxifen, the researchers said at the 23rd Annual San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium. "On-going studies of exemestane suggest promise in many stages of breast cancer," said Dr. Caroline Lohrisch of the Investigational Drug Branch for Breast Cancer, European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer. AROMASIN was well tolerated in the trial. Side effects from AROMASIN versus from tamoxifen were reported as follows: hot flashes, 3.3 percent versus 13.3 percent; sweating, 0 percent vs. 8.3 percent; pain, 10 percent vs. 15 percent; edema, 1.7 percent vs. 10 percent; nausea, 3.3 percent vs. 8.3 percent; fatigue, 11.7 percent vs. 13.3 percent, and dyspnea, 10 percent vs. 8.3 percent.
