FISH OIL REDUCES HEART RISK IN POSTMENOPAUSAL WOMEN

Fish oil contains essential omega-3 fatty acids that favorably affect the metabolism of fat and cholesterol. Previous studies have shown that taking fish oil supplements reduce the risk of heart disease in men. In this study, postmenopausal women between 43 and 60 were given either 8 capsules of fish oil or placebo daily for 4 weeks. Some women in the study were on hormone replacement therapy (HRT). Regardless of their HRT status, women in fish oil group had much better lipid pattern, which reduced the risk of heart disease by 27%.

The deficiency of the essential fatty acids is quite common, which is the reason I recommend fish oil supplements to most of my patients. American Journal of Clinical Nutrition 2000;72:389-394.
